USA :: San Diego :: Tijuana Estuary

Sun setting behind Imperial Beach Pier near Tijuana River Estuary

Trip Summary

Tijuana Estuary is the largest coastal wetland in Southern California and it is located on the international border between the U.S. and Mexico. The Reserve offers several walking trails, taking visitors into prime bird watching areas and down to the river mouth where the Tijuana River meets the Pacific Ocean -- see Trail Map in the Gallery.  There are many options;  on my visit in Feb '22 I parked at one of Residential Streets near Imperial Beach Boulevard, then approached via North McCoy Trail.   After checking Visitor Center I walked North McCoy to the End then turned back and continued on River Mouth Loop / South McCoy.   Many different options exist.  Note that North and South McCoy don't connect directly as there is no bridge over intervening braided River Channel.  After reaching end of South McCoy I tried to cut directly across the wetland to Seacoast Trial, but despite several game trails heading in that direction was eventually stopped by too much Mud - return the same way.

Only nuisance is steady helicopter noise from Marine Naval Landing Field bordering the Preserve, but it tends to die down after 5pm. This is very pleasant way to spend afternoon, specially if you are into Bird watching.  Added benefit is nearby Imperial Beach Pier with many small restaurants where one can enjoy sunset across Coronado Bay from the Patio.
