Sawback Trail :: Pulsatilla Pass and Lake |
One of most scenic parts of Sawback Trail. Remote backcountry area that can not be visited without overnight stay. 1-way Sawback backpackers just pass with burden of heavy overnight gear, but it is far far better to set "basecamp" at Jo29, then allow full day to explore wonderful alpine with light pack and plenty of time. On my trip I alotted half-day, but that was not enough. There is much room for off-trail exploration, including inviting easy meadows on east side, loop around Pulsatilla Lake or adventurous exploration of high alpine bowls west of the lake.
From Jo29 trail follows Johnston Creek and after passing through thickets of bush ~15 min past the campground disappears. It is unclear where to go; correct answer is to ford the creek (easy rock hop in late summer) to left side where trail will reappear. Note trail on right side; do not follow thinking it might loop - it goes back to the campground. Some lovely waterfalls bit further up beg for a break; it would be tempting just to sit there and spend whole day doing absolutely nothing! Trail eventually reaches treeline and after crossing meadow starts moderately steep ascent to the pass, passing by some huge boulders that fell off from Pulsatilla Peak. Wide saddle - lead photo on this page - is simply fantastic, and you are likely to have it to yourself.
Beyond the Pass trail descends to wide alpine bowl then contours above the lake on right (east) side. North side of the lake is reached ~40min from the Pass and it has one lovely grassy bench before trail dips below treeline towards Wilflower Creek. I had very casual lunch there, before turning back and hiking along lake shore back to the Pass and Jo29. As for Sawback Trail, it continues north on some boggy terrain to Wildflower Creek; this is the most unpleasant section of entire trail one of reasons I don't think I will ever hike whole thing; far far better to spend time exploring wonderful Pulsatilla Alpine instead. |
