Sawback Trail :: Johnston Creek |
Long plod but a necessary prerequisite for scenic wonders at Pulsatilla / Badger Alpine Environments. Despite being labelled as boring slog in some circles, I found travel up this mainly forested valley more scenic than expected. Moose Meadows start is much preferred to ultra tourist busy Johnston Canyon trailhead; both variations merge at km 2.7 (measured from Moose Meadows). Beyond Ink Pots crowds thin out and only odd backpacker will be encountered. Jo9 campground placed on bench above confluence of Johnston and Mystic creeks is nice, but too close for first night if coming from Moose Meadows. Most people that overnight at Jo29 are classic Sawback version backpackers, crossing over from/to Forty Mile creek via Mystic Pass. Warden Cabin, 45min - 1hr past Jo9 situated in nice open meadow is excellent spot for lunch break. Luellen Lake junction is reached in another hour. Luellen is excellent overnight choice, but it tends to be busier than other Sawback campgrounds - except Baker Lake. My suggestion is to backpack Luellen on its own as early season overnight late May timeframe; vistas of still half frozen lake below sheer cliffs of Helena Ridge are spectacular in the morning. The campground (Jo19) is quite nice. Large picnic bench and eating area are near lake outlet and have open views.
Beyond Luellen Junction trail crosses to west side and forest starts gradually thinning out. Next crossing back to east side is ~2km further up and slightly confusing as horse and hikers trail overlap - you might have to backtrack a bit, as I had to. Back to east side valley opens up quite nicely and distant Pulsatilla Pass comes into sight. There is still almost an hour to Jo29, but travel is quite scenic. Reaching signed Badger Pass junction stay left and in another 6-8min watch for spur trail on right side leading to Jo29 campground
I found Jo29 to be excellent; one of nicest Rockies back-country campgrounds I ever stayed at. There are only 5 sites and they are well spaced out and sheltered. Food area has six metal lockers and fire ring - see gallery. Johnston Creek water source is near by. It is very peaceful and rarely fills up, even in summer. Only downside are commercial horse parties, although on my visit I did not encounter any. An excellent "basecamp" for day-hikes to Badger / Pulsatilla Passes. |
