Sawback Trail :: Badger Pass

One of highest passes reached by official trail and a must for front ranges explorer. Some Sawback backpackers coming in/out Johnston Creek miss it completely and this is such a waste.  Even if you are not planning coming from/to Flint's Park direction, it is well worth leaving extra afternoon at Jo29 and dayhike Badger Pass from there.  Note than Block Lakes side is much steeper from Jonhston Creek side.  On my visit I dayhiked from Jo29 "basecamp" and it was terrific afternoon.  This is how gallery is presented.  Much further exploration is possible, including scramble of Bonnet outlier (main summit requires glacier crossing).

From Jo29 easiest way is to follow Jonhston Creek trail ~500m to signed Badger Pass junction.  There is also "shortcut" behind campground 'whacking at edge of forest, but official way is probably faster.  Trail initially ascends moderately steep section to bench above Badger creek, then drops to creek level.  Ensuing section has been washed out as of summer 2021 and there are some route-finding issues.  Do not climb left bank; stay in creek level and hop over rocks (cairns possible).  Trail resumes, still on left (north) side after no more than 10 minutes. Rest is easy and very scenic.  Peek over on right side for some lovely cascades, then after 30min of moderate ascent reach treeline. Beautiful alpine with small tarns is pure delight. The pass is low saddle on horizon and ascent presents no problems.  Windswept saddle usually has tall cairn.  You can trace trail on east side dropping much more steeply towards Block Lakes.  Good eyes can spot scree trail on talus slopes across the valley NE and this is normal Mt. Bonnet approach route.

I am likely to visit Badger Pass again as day OnB from Block Lakes "basecamp" and will update this page when that happens, including possible ascent of Bonnet outlier or main peak.

Badger Creek Badger Creek from little rise ~15min from Jo29.  Trail descends and is usually washed out briefly - stay on left side at creek level

Badger Cascades Lovely Badger Creek cascades as trail starts ascending to treeline

Badger Alpine Trademark Rockies Alpine Meadows above Treeline

Badger Alpine Heading towards Badger Pass, low saddle on Horizon - about 30 min of delightful hiking from here

Badger Alpine Looking back towards Johnston Creek Valley

Badger Pass Final ascent to Badger Pass;  good scree trail stays on left side

Badger Pass Cairn Badger Pass at 2570m elevation and highest point on Sawback Circuit. Trail drops much more steeply on east side towards Block Lakes Junction

Block and Noetic Block Mtn (L) and Noetic Peak (R) from Badger Pass

Bonnet / Hickson Looking north from little rise above Badger Pass.  Obvious saddle center is mountaineer access to Bonnet Peak (Right - glacier, not seen from here, must be crossed to true summit) while Hickson Peak to the left is stiff class 4 scramble that might require technical gear
