Often overlooked in favour of better known Sedona or Grand Canyon National Park, Prescott is worthy Arizona travel destination on its own. I always just drove through on my way south to Phoenix, but in December '23 decided to explore for a week. While area still offers great outdoors, I enjoyed the most awesome George Phippen Museum of Western Art as well as touring Embry-Riddle Institute of Aeronautical Engineering. Downtown Prescott is must see; historic Yavapai Courthouse, museums and many restaurants/bars with strong pronounced wild-west vibe. There are also several lakes in the area, something not common in dry Arizona desert climate. Loop hikes around Watson and Willow riparian habitats are very scenic, while Granite Mountain wilderness to the NW has many developed trails of various difficulty. Visit to Heritage Park Zoo, non-profit wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the conservation and protection of native and exotic animals, offers much more than initially expected.
