My only Japan visit so far was short - 24 hour layover at Tokyo Haneda International Airport on return from SE Asia trek. After sleeping at airport bench, I took downtown train and spent 8 hours exploring Asakusa district. Skytree Tower was fantastic and it is apparently possible to see Mount Fuji from the top, but I did not have enough time to go up. Later I enjoyed Senso-Ji pagoda, meal in small restaurant and finished with a walk by Sumida River before returning to the Airport.
I will definitely return to Japan, probably during fabled Cherry Blossom season in early April. It is very easy to travel independently in Japan because of well developed fast train network. Extremely clean with friendly people and a must go Asian destination.
